The Polikarpov I-16 "Fly" was a Soviet aircraft of revolutionary design, it was the first cantilever (or cantilever) wing monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear. The I-16 was introduced to mid-1930s and formed the backbone of the Soviet Air Force at the beginning of World War II.

Proceeds of Soviet aid to the government of the Republic, during the early stages of the Spanish civil war the Polikarpov I-16 "Mosca" was the most advanced fighter of the time until the appearance of the German BF-109 fighter.  The Fly plane was the most appreciated mount by Republican pilots and aces. The I-16 fEU call Fly for the Republican side and Rat by the national side for its small fuselage and its unusual appearance. This famous fighter fought on all fronts, from the Ebro to the Jarama, making a place for itself in the history of Spanish military aviation.
